5 Reasons Why Ruth Negga Is This Year's Break-Out Star To Watch
She is what Lupita Nyong'o was to 2014: A little-known name who grew to become a fashion juggernaut. Here, we break down why everyone should be on the watch for Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga.
By KENG YANG SHUEN,
#1: She's not afraid to take risks
Donning a custom Louis Vuitton sequinned number for the Golden Globes, the simple yet modern silhouette of the design starkly contrasted with the more ornate and feminine gowns worn by other attendees. Some might say it resembles a diving suit, but Negga stood out the most with her unfussy yet fashion-forward look. She even paired her Vuitton gown with gunmetal grey eyeshadow, aka the hottest look to sport this season.
#2: She pulls off Valentino with ease
A complete 180-degree turnaround from her futuristic Vuitton look, this ethereal Valentino spring 2017 confection was one of the most whimsical gowns of the collection, yet Negga gamely took it on without the usual modification from the runway to the red carpet (FYI: celebrities usually insert a lining to protect their modesty).
#3: She makes retro work for her
Channelling a slight '50s vibe, the actress looked adorable in Miu Miu at the recent luncheon for Oscars nominees - she's one of five actresses vying for the Best Actress award. It might even have been a clever nod to the film she's nominated for: Loving, a 1950s historical drama centred on an interracial marriage, which was prohibited at the time.
#4: She isn't afraid to mix it up
A dress awash in prints and colours as bright as this might prove daunting to others, but Negga looked right at home in this Rosie Assoulin number.
#5: She supports younger labels as well
While Negga seems to have a preference for the likes of Rodarte and Valentino, she does show love to younger labels as well. Pictured here: Negga in New York label of the moment Monse. Donning a pinstriped pantsuit, the effect was immediately cool without trying too hard. Whether Negga lands the big prize - the Best Actress gong at the Oscars - we'll be looking out for her for the rest of award season and beyond.
